Ugly is cheap but it is still ugly

I got some feedback today from an old friend and colleague who said left little doubt but that he was unimpressed with the Front Page of Livelink-Experts.com ... while I have to admit to some disappointment at reading the words, I can't really deny the page lacks aesthetics. As I said to him, "Ugly can be fixed" but the truth is that Ugly is also turning people off.

Livelink-Experts.com is intended to be a place for experts in Livelink and as such one might hope that looks take a back seat to functionality; however that is naive and counter-intuitive. What I find somewhat amusing is that I find the Front Page attractive but I think that is because I built it and I know how difficult it is to do; I've come to enjoy it. It is good that I get this slap in the face, it is good that there are folks willing to provide it.

The question before me is how to solve it? As a "give me a terminal window/command line and leave me alone" kind of computer user, knowing what is visually appealing to others turns out to be very difficult. So, the answer is obvious, stop trying to do everything and hire somebody else to do it.

I'm not even sure where to begin, to be honest; I'm a technical expert that is constantly being told from my very artistic wife that I've no clue as to what is aesthetically pleasing so I'm off to figure out how to hire somebody to do a job that I am not sure what is a success only that I'm unable to achieve it. A humbling experience.
