Livelink Performance -- the Elusive Usage Profile
Forget about the words, log me in or create an accountand take me to Usage Profile Data Generator
Livelink Performance is something of a black art to most people; with the extensibility and diversity of the product it is very difficult to even say what Livelink Performance means. How can one compare an application called Email Management to one called Document Management let alone to one called Internal Controls? What sense does it make to talk about "Livelink Performance" in such cases? Almost none, in fact, and that is why the notion of an Usage Profile was created in the first place.

While many of us who have been using Livelink for years don't necessarily think of things this way, Livelink is less an application than it is a platform for hosting applications. Through Open Text and it's many partners, there are literally hundreds, perhaps even thousands of distinct applications and solutions currently deployed using the Open Text Content Server formerly and affectionately known as Livelink or Livelink Enterprise Server. While there are certainly similarities between some of the disparate applications, and some are indeed only industry-specific solutions of a more generic application, on the whole and at the transaction level, the differences between the applications are severe enough to make it very risky to use the performance characteristics of one Livelink-based application to size, scale, or design different one.
Until now, determining your Usage Profile involves significant expense one way or another. Either you spend money with Open Text and/or it's partners to perform an analysis of your system log files using the tools they have developed, or you develop your own tools to analyse the files. No matter which approach you took, you would have to pay real money for this vital information, and if you don't know what your Usage Profile is then you really don't know your system.
But now, you can get this vital information online for free (though you will need to login or become a member first) using only a javascript-enabled Web Browser like Firefox or IE and working with your own SummaryTimings files. Not only can you determine your Usage Profile but you can also learn how many Livelink Threads you will need to meet both your average peak load and your predicted absolute (burst) peak load. By doing this regularly, you can track this information to perform a Trend Analysis of your performance data ensuring you are proactively aware of the need for future resources and/or problematic transactions.
How can we afford to do this? What's the catch?
